made of elephant ivory (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797).It depicts a sage elder, an emblematic figure in Chinese tradition, sitting in a contemplative position. He is caught in the act of reading a book, which he holds in his left hand, while in his right he holds a staff adorned with ornamental elements, including a perforated rock, reminiscent of the shapes of Chinese gardens.Next to the figure is carved a large feline, probably a tiger, with its jaws wide open, symbolising power and protection. The detail of the facial expressions and the drapery of the robes is masterfully executed, reflecting the craftsmanship of the time. The carving is in a good state of preservation with the normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. This lot, accompanied by a CITES certificate and expertise issued by Ce.S.Ar Centro studi archeometici, is only available for sale with shipments within the European Union.
