Andreas Schelfhout,
1787 The Hague - 1870 ibid.
WINTER RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH ICE FUN
Oil on wood.
34 x 48.5 cm.
Signed "A. Schelfhout" on the tree trunk.
In floral frame with white mat opening.
Two central defoliated trees serve as a comparison in size for the wide landscape with its bustle on the ice and a sunlit building further to the right, which forms the vanguard for an entire village that can be seen further back on the banks of the water.
His landscapes were very popular even during his lifetime. He painted them carefully, with great technical refinement and a strong sense of anecdotal detail. Schelfhout was one of the greatest specialists in Dutch landscape painting of the 19th century. His paintings visibly hark back to the great Dutch tradition of the 17th century. Schelfhout's pupils included Charles Henry Joseph Leickert (1816-1907), Johan-Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) and Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862), Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn (1817-1897) and Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom (1805-1880).
