Eugeniusz Eibisch's art was shaped by domestic and European models, including the circle of Krakow's Formists and a long stay in Paris, where the painter had direct contact with artists from the École de Paris circle.
The offered painting, "On guard", comes from the post-war period of the work of Eugeniusz Eibisch, who resided in Cracow since 1939, successively taking over the chair of drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts and, from 1945, as rector of the academy. It is assumed that the work may have been created while the artist was on vacation in Kudowa Zdrój, around 1947.
In it, Eugeniusz Eibisch took up a subject unusual for his work, showing a figure in a landscape. In the foreground he depicted a soldier, most likely of the Border Protection Forces. The very painterly outline of the figure and the fact that his back is turned to the viewer makes it impossible to capture the details of his physiognomy or clothing, which, together with the dark, subdued range of colors, gives the work an aura of mystery. The mass is built up with color, and clear brushstrokes create a thick, rough, impasto structure, giving the impression of an expressive, shimmering and somehow elusive event. The form plays a supreme role in relation to the subject, making the painting an independent color composition.
