Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí—a Spanish painter and one of the most famous Surrealists. He is one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th century. He was often perceived as an extreme eccentric and devised his own surrealist method known as “paranoiac-critical.”
Salvador Dalí’s painting titled “Two Old Men with Beards” (Deux vieillards aux barbes grises) was painted in 1964. It is a later work by the artist, depicting two old men with long, gray beards, dressed in multicolored robes.
Unlike Dalí’s other works, this painting is characterized by a more traditional approach to portraiture, though surrealist elements are still present. The old men are depicted realistically, but their appearance—especially their beards and robes—includes certain fantastical details. The different colors of the robes—one old man is dressed in a yellow robe and the other in a gray one—may symbolize various aspects of life, aging, and wisdom. The yellow robe represents light, energy, or gold, which could suggest this old man’s optimistic or rich life experiences. The gray robe, on the other hand, may be associated with the earth, stability, or modesty, suggesting a more subdued and perhaps more pragmatic character.
The background of the painting is abstract—a hallmark of Dalí’s surrealist style—and lends the composition a somewhat surreal, dreamlike atmosphere. The painting invites reflection on the symbolism of old age, the duality of human nature, and the diversity of life experiences. Like many of Dalí’s works, this painting also prompts the viewer to contemplate deeper meanings and hidden messages that can be interpreted in various ways.
This painting is part of a private collection. Its style, while retaining elements typical of Dalí, reflects the artist’s more mature approach to the subject, focusing on detail and the emotional expression of the figures. As a result, “Two Old Men with Beards” is part of Dalí’s rich legacy as an artist who skillfully combined realism with surrealism, creating works full of symbolism and hidden meanings.
