1er Cru, Côte de Beaune
Comments
The domaine was founded in 1930 by Fernand Morey. Today it bears the name of his son, who inherited the estate from his father in the 1950s. Then, in a model quite typical of Burgundy, the estate was divided between Marc's children and his brother-in-law. Today, wines made under the Domaine Marc Morey et Fils banner are vinified by Sabine Mollard, daughter of Bernard...i.e. the aforementioned brother-in-law. Marc's descendants operate under the Domaine Morey-Conet banner.
The estate pays the greatest attention to cultivation. The management of the bushes, the care of them in every season, the management of the stems and leaves are subordinated to obtaining fruit of the highest quality. Plant protection products are used only in extremely difficult situations, as concern for the environment and nature comes first at the producer.
The vinification process is tailored to the nature of the vintage and terroir. However, most of the wines are matured on the lees, and the use of new oak is limited to 25%. This helps to highlight the image of the individual plots in each wine.
En Virondot is one of the highest-lying plots in Chassagne-Montrachet. Here the producer runs about 30-year-old vines on limestone soils. New barrel is limited, but maturation on yeast and batonnage is. The result is a wine that is quite full-bodied and powerful, but based on fruit and mineral notes. Les Chenevottes, on the other hand, has a bit more clay in the soil, hence the wine has a bit more depth and juiciness. It integrates nicely the sweet vanilla notes coming from the barrel.
