Marek Sobczyk studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1975 to 1980. His diploma project, created under the supervision of Prof. Stefan Gierowski, was partially censored by the academy’s administration. In the early period of his career, the artist painted decorative, synthetic abstract compositions. In 1983, he joined the Grupa art collective, with which he exhibited until the group disbanded in 1992. He enjoyed painting collaboratively with colleagues: with Ryszard Woźniak in 1983 and with Jarosław Modzelewski in 1984 (he resumed his collaboration with Modzelewski in the 1990s, which resulted in a series of joint paintings exhibited in 1998). In the mid-1980s, he painted elaborate figurative compositions, drawing on sacred or historical themes, or blending various motifs as if in a dream or hallucination. During this period, with his full-swing painting style, intense color palette, and rich texture, he most closely approached the stylistic characteristics of New Expressionism, which dominated the painting of the early 1980s.
