A fragment of a sheet, without any series designation or numbering, comprising two pieces. The item comes from archival remnants.
The piece is illustrated in Czesław Miłczak’s catalog, Volume I, p. 508 (2023 ed.).
Both banknotes feature cancellation perforations, with cancellation holes in the printed area and in the margins. The wide margins are fully preserved, with particularly extensive left and top margins where the watermarks are fully visible.
On the left margin of the sheet is an oval “BAHNPOST” railway postmark with the route name “INSTERBURG – DEUTSCH EYL AU,” referring to the line between Wystruć (now Czerniachowsk) – Iława (Deutsch Eylau). In the center is the train number “Z. 2149” (Z = Zug). In the lower section, the date “… 9.45”; the reading “35.9.45” indicates an incorrect date stamp setting (a date that is impossible according to the calendar), which should be attributed to an error in setting the date during the final period of the war and the first postwar months.
A striking, display-worthy item that combines an occupation banknote with an interesting postal and railway context. An intriguing and rare addition to a collection of banknotes issued by the Bank of Issue in Poland.
