Underglaze painting, cobalt on stoneware (1280°C)
Aleksandra Popławska is a painter and art conservator, a graduate of the Department of Graphic Arts and the Department of Conservation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. She has been working professionally in art conservation since 2006.
Her particular areas of interest include painting technologies and techniques, as well as the possibilities of applying them to unconventional surfaces. Her experience in conservation allows her to perceive a painting both as a representation and as a material record of the creative process. Ceramics, a constant presence in her life since childhood, have become a natural field for this exploration.
In her work, she experiments with translating the language of painting onto ceramic surfaces, exploring the relationship between image, material,
and fire. The landscape on display is her original interpretation of Johannes Vermeer’s “View of Delft,” painted on stoneware tiles, then glazed and fired. The work combines a fascination with historical painting
and a search for new possibilities for the image.
