Biography
Ewelina Pęksowa was a Polish folk painter creating on glass and a state class ski judge. Ewelina was the daughter of Stanislaw Zubek, a manufacturer of skis and souvenirs from Podhale. She graduated from Zakopane's "Szarotka" middle school in 1939, after which she left for Cracow. After the war she returned to Zakopane, where she worked in the family store. Pęksowa's artistic career began in the mid-1960s, when she first presented her works at an exhibition of folk and commemorative art organized by the Podhale Association. She had been painting on glass since 1968 and was a member of the Association of Folk Artists. Her work has gained recognition, and the artist herself has received numerous awards, including the Oskar Kolberg Award for her contribution to folk culture in 1976, the title of "Meritorious to National Culture" in 1986, the St. Brother Albert Award for achievements in sacred art in 1987, and the Gold Medal "Meritorious to Culture Gloria Artis" in 2008. Pęksowa has had more than 55 solo exhibitions and more than 300 group exhibitions, both in Poland and abroad, in countries such as Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK and the USSR. A collection of her works is housed in the Tatra Museum in Zakopane.
