acrylic, paper, varnish, 38 x 190 cm, 2023
Katarzyna Skąpska was born in 1979 in Toruń, Poland. She discovered paper as a creative material in 2019. For her works she uses egg cartons, which she recycles, and the result is a completely new product. Her inspiration comes from nature, light and the human body, especially women. The human body, or rather its fragments shown as art, as sculpture, which she combines with light, creating sculptures in the form of lamps. Understated, unfinished, like a crumbled fragment. Paper dough and cement are used to create an extremely malleable mass, which becomes hard once it is formed and dries. Skąpska's sculptures are an invitation to sensuality, showing at the same time the fragility of human life and the imperfection of the body. Paper is no longer an ordinary material, it is a support for new forms and emotions. Its softness and plasticity becomes contradictory to its roughness, creating a certain paradox.
