Descrierea lotului
The composition depicts two figures - a young man and a woman sitting close together on a bench. The silhouettes are framed in a sketchy manner, with soft, non-uniform contours. The man - seated from the left is looking ahead, the woman is leaning against his shoulder; together they form a compact compositional unit. The clothes are marked in an abbreviated manner, using thin lines and patches of color.
The background is a simplified view of urban buildings - geometric building blocks, vertical and horizontal architectural divisions and fragments of elevations with window openings are visible. The whole picture is maintained in a limited color palette: grays, dimmed browns and accents of blue and pink. Visible in the lower part is the initial signature "W.S." along with the date "44".
Drawing in pencil lavaged in ink and watercolor on paper,
Dimensions: approx. 24.5 x 18 cm.
Condition: as in photos.
The work is in the context of artistic testimonies created during World War II, where quick drawing techniques were combined with delicate color to capture fleeting scenes of everyday life. The juxtaposition of an intimate scene of two people with a fragmentary cityscape may suggest an attempt to preserve an image of private life in the reality of a destroyed or threatened urban space.
The presumed location - Warsaw - and the date 1944 direct the interpretation towards a particularly dramatic historical moment, which gives the scene an additional layer of meaning. At the same time, the synthetic, sketchy nature of the representation indicates a work created in situ, perhaps as an observational notation.
The signature "W.S." opens the field for attribution, but its clear attribution remains uncertain. It is possible that the work in question is by Wladyslaw Strumillo, although the lack of conclusive evidence calls for caution. Regardless of authorship, the object has significant documentary and collector value as an example of Polish wartime drawing art, combining formal qualities with a potential historical message.
