Biography
Set designer, theater director, painter, graphic artist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. The artist’s early work in painting and graphic art dates back to the 1950s. Initially fascinated by Art Informel, he employed the collage technique; in the 1960s, he increasingly moved toward assemblage—emphasizing the texture of his compositions by incorporating fragments of ready-made objects. He also referenced his tragic wartime experiences in his paintings from the 1980s and 1990s, in which he drew upon both figurative art and abstract expressionism. He represented Poland, among other places, at the Venice Biennale (1970 and 1990) and the São Paulo Biennial (1979 and 1989).
