Max Brüning (Delitzsch in Saxony 1887 - Lindau on Lake Constance 1968) - German painter, printmaker, engraver; from 1902 he studied at the Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe in Leipzig, where from 1907 he was a pupil of the Viennese professor Alois Kolb and engraver Peter Palm. In 1912 he went on an extended study tour of southern and southeastern Europe and Turkey. He then studied with Franz vov Stuck at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich some more. From 1915 he served in the Bavarian army as a war correspondent and painter-documentarian. In Cambrai, northern France, he portrayed soldiers - British prisoners of war - creating numerous drawings and prints (Citadel at Cambrai). At that time he also portrayed Prince Wilhelm von Preusen, to whom he gave drawing lessons. In the first years after the war he stayed in Leipzig, from where he moved to Berlin in 1923. In 1935 he married painter Victoria Richter, and in 1938 the two settled in Igls near Innsbruck. Expelled from Austria as a German citizen in 1945, he moved to Lindau on Lake Constance. He exhibited his works from 1910, among others in Leipzig, Munich and Chemitz. He painted in oil and pastel and was the author of numerous prints, often colored in watercolor. In addition to portraits of elegant ladies and people from the world of politics, film, sports and art, he also painted still lifes, paintings with oriental themes (Buddha, Portrait of the 13th Dalai Lama) and, later, alpine landscapes and - the product of his travels at the time - Spanish landscapes. He was also the author of humorous erotic drawings. His work is described as salon art combined with the current of the so-called New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) and in the late period also with Post-Impressionism. The artist's works are kept, among others, in the collections of museums in Leipzig, Munich, Lindau and Chemitz.
