One ofthe leadingrepresentatives of geometric abstraction.Considereda precursor and representative of the op-art movement.Hecreated by composingarrangements, usinggeometricshapes(the most characteristicarecube-shaped compositions).Hecreated the illusion of spatialdepth on two-dimensional surfaces, usingonly abstract color patches. Originally, his works were dominated by black and white colors, which he greatly diversified in hislaterwork.
From 1955, he created series of "optical-kinetic" paintings that give theimpression of pulsating, waving, spinning or flickering. Since 1960, the artistdeveloped the concept of a visual alphabetentitled "Planetary Folklore"in his theoretical manifestos.
"Pillango," meaning "butterfly" in Hungarian, is an example of his distinctive style, which combines abstract geometry with optical illusion to create dynamic and pulsating visual effects. The work "Pillango" was created around1971. "Pillango"isnotable for its use of geometricshapesandcolors to create theillusion ofthree-dimensionalityand movement ona flat surface.
