Biography
Jerzy Mierzejewski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1937 to 1939, in the studio of Prof. Mieczysław Kotarbiński. He received his diploma in 1956. From 1944 to 1946, he participated in the organization and first exhibitions of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers; from 1954 to 1960, he served as president of the Association’s painting section in Warsaw. He was also affiliated with the Higher School of Theater and Film in Łódź, where he served as dean of the Cinematography Department and the Directing Department, as well as vice-rector. In 1976, he was appointed associate professor, and in 1990, full professor. He spent a long time abroad and exhibited extensively in the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, including at the exhibition “The Selective Eye” at the Grown Tower Gallery in Los Angeles (1970), where works by Picasso, Chagall, and Braque were displayed alongside those of J. Mierzejewski. In the late 1980s, the artist returned permanently to Poland. In 1997, he was awarded the J. Cybis Prize. In 2004, the National Museum in Warsaw hosted a major exhibition featuring the Mierzejewskis—Jerzy, his brother Andrzej, and their father, Jacek. In 2006, Jerzy Mierzejewski received an honorary doctorate from the PWSFTviT in Łódź.
