Russia(?) 19th century: Jesus Christ Pantocrator

Icon depicting Christ Pantocrator - the Omnipotent and Teacher - shown frontally, in a bust view. Christ is making a blessing gesture with his right hand, while in his left hand he is holding an open Gospel book with visible text in the Orthodox Slavonic language.

The composition preserves the classical iconographic canon: the head of Christ is surrounded by a cross nimbus, the face has elongated proportions, large penetrating eyes and a calm, hieratic expression. A typical iconographic variant of the Pantocrator, widespread in Orthodox art. In contrast, the robes - tunic and himation - are modeled more softly, and the influence of academic painting is evident, which would indicate a later 19th-century influence in the traditional iconic formula.
