Biography
One of Poland’s most prominent ceramic artists. He lived in Israel from the age of 16, later in Brazil, and in 1976 settled in New York, where he founded Modus Design and the Contemporary Porcelain gallery. From 1985 to 2004, he served as dean of the Department of Ceramics at the Parsons School of Design in New York; he also taught as a visiting professor at the National Academy of the Arts in Bergen. In 2012, he opened the Design Centrum Kielce, and a year later, the Ćmielów Design Studio. He is currently a professor at the Royal College of Art in London. Although he has been teaching at prestigious art and design academies for years, the artist himself does not hold a degree from any of the schools he attended. He learned his craft through hands-on experience: in the countries where he lived and traveled, in a wide variety of studios, communes, and kibbutzim. In addition to designing functional objects, Cecuła creates artistic installations with archaeological and anthropological themes that fill entire gallery halls.
