An anthropological collection of materials on the culture of Volhynia; it contains ethnographic materials from Kolberg’s 1862 journey to Volhynia, including descriptions of weddings, ritual songs, popular melodies, as well as folkloric records and fairy tales. The author was a 19th-century Polish ethnographer, encyclopedist, folklorist, and composer. He traveled extensively, particularly throughout the historical lands of Poland, and his guiding principle was to compile a work based on sources from the entire pre-partition Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
