Franciszek Kmita studied in 1947-53 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw - painting under Jan Sokolowski, Eugeniusz Arct and Michal Bylina, graphic design under Andrzej Rudzinski. While still a student, in 1951 he won second prize at a painting exhibition accompanying the Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin (the painting "Reading" was purchased for the museum of the Berlin Academy). He participated in the Fourth National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1954. After graduation, in 1954 he settled permanently in Kazimierz-on-Vistula. With time, he became a well-known and respected figure - constantly present with his easel in the open air of the city, an activist and social activist, president of the Society for the Care of the Monuments of Kazimierz, which independently reconstructed a historic tenement house into a house of its own with a gallery, at the same time the artist is increasingly well known outside his city through his numerous travels, exhibitions in many countries of the world, articles, interviews and reports in the press, radio and television. As a painter and draughtsman, he represents realism, illuminated and shimmering on the model of Post-Impressionism, somewhat stylized, also not indifferent to the local tradition of painting of Tadeusz Pruszkowski's students, who held annual plein-air paintings in Kazimierz (Kmita, through his studies with professors Arct and Bylina, who studied under Pruszkowski, can consider himself an heir to this tradition).
