From the series of so-called “colored furniture” from the Jabłkowski Brothers Department Store (1914–1939);
beech, chrome-plated steel, rosewood; 71.2 x 65 x 40.5 cm.
Warsaw, ca. 1928–1930.
A bar cart with two trays painted dark orange, connected by blackened balusters topped with metal rings and balls. The bar cart can be disassembled.
The fold-out table with two trays—a bar cart—presented here is part of the ultra-modern, colorful furniture that was in vogue in the early 1930s. Its color scheme, limited to contrasting orange tabletops and blackened supports, is among the more restrained options compared to the multicolored armchairs and desks of the time. One of the first pieces of furniture in this style was designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1917—the Red and Blue Chair. In Warsaw, from 1929 to 1933, the MeKo Colored Furniture Factory operated, run by J. Grossman and I. Reicherówna. A similar bar cabinet was sold by the Jabłkowski Brothers Department Store in 1937 (sales catalog “We Help the Housewife”).
The bar cabinet has been restored and is in excellent condition; the surfaces of the trays and supports have been repainted following color analysis; the balls and wheels are chrome-plated; the wheels have their original rubber tires.
A unique piece.
