LT.4561 - DT.3414; Silver - 2.21 g - 13 mm - 10 h
MP specimen No. 14 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises,” by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit—acquired from Y. Cellard in 2008.
Drachma struck on a short but regular flan, with perfectly centered and complete designs. Fine iridescent gray patina, with a brown area above the head on the obverse and in front of the horse’s chest on the reverse. Superb.
While these drachmas are similar to the Bituriges coinage—with a very close resemblance on the obverse—the reverse featuring a cut-off head appears to be characteristic of issues attributed to the Lemovices. Within this series, there are numerous variations depending on the orientation of the obverse and reverse, as well as the motif between the horse’s legs (a dotted ring, a beaded and dotted ring, or three rings arranged in a triangle).
