Jan Václav Kautský, an important Czech landscape painter of the 19th century, was among the most outstanding students of Max Haushofer, professor of landscape painting at the Prague Academy. Under his guidance, he adopted a romanticized concept of the landscape based on a detailed observation of nature, an emphasis on the atmosphere and a poetic touch of everyday rural motifs.The presented painting depicts an idyllic forest landscape with a shepherd and a small herd of sheep, as they follow a winding path under massive treetops. Kautský masterfully uses the light that penetrates between the trees and models the space in golden and green tones. Emphasis on the harmony of nature and peaceful rural life is a typical feature of his work.
