Biography
Artur Kolnik was a Polish painter of Jewish descent. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in 1914. In 1931, he moved to Paris, where he settled permanently. He is considered one of the representatives of so-called “Jewish Expressionism” in art—alongside Fryderyk Kleinman, Samuel Cygler, and Maurycy Appelbaum. From 1932, he was a member of the Association of Jewish Painters and Sculptors in Kraków; in 1933, an exhibition of his work was held at the Jewish Academic House in Kraków. He focused primarily on printmaking and illustration—his portfolio of 24 woodcuts, *Sous le chapeau haut de forme*, with an introduction by Henri Barbusse, gained recognition and acclaim among the public.
