Austrian Painter of the 17th Century, Flagellation of Jesus
The flagellation of Jesus is an episode in the life of Jesus narrated by the Gospels (Mk 15,15-16; Mt27,26-27; Lk23,16-26; Jn19,1-17). The episode takes place in a dark cellar lit only by the light of a torch. Here the Roman soldiers mistreat Jesus, strip him, tie his hands and place a woven crown of thorns on his head. The seat resembles a throne, but it is not. Even the branch that Christ holds in his hand is a parody of a sceptre. The artist paints in sober colours with a strong emphasis on light and dark, and play of shadows. A mocking figure on the right is pointing at Christ.
