In 1831 he began studying painting at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he was a pupil of Johann Gottfried Schadow. From 1836 he participated in exhibitions of the Berlin Academy. In 1837-38 he stayed in Paris, where he studied with Eugène Isabey and Eugène Lepoittevin. He then returned to Berlin. In 1842-43 he traveled in Italy. He visited London many times, where he also exhibited. The most common subject of his atmospheric works are views of cities by water characterized by precise detail. He painted primarily the cities and coasts of northern Germany, the Rhineland, Holland, Belgium and northern France. He also reached out to Italian coasts, especially Venetian vedutas.
