Sign. AD: A. Savickas / 2012
Augustinas Savickas (1919 - 2012) was one of the most significant Lithuanian artists of the second half of the 20th century, whose works moved from landscapes and still lifes to thematic figurative paintings, often interpreting the relationship between human existence, nature and history.
Augustinas Savickas's work is distinguished by a mature, intellectual and at the same time emotional language of painting. He was able to combine the tradition of thematic figurative painting with a personal, poetic vision, and therefore remained distinctive even while adapting to the demands of the Soviet era. His work often depicts people in close connection with their surroundings - nature, urban space or cultural references - and his paintings are characterised by subtle colour tones, clear forms and thoughtful compositions. The late work is characterised by a deeper symbolism, a more expressive gesture and a more pronounced emotional tension. Savickas is considered one of the most important Lithuanian painters of the 20th century, whose work combines tradition, humanist thought and modern artistic thinking.
