Biography
Polish folk artist. He carved wood from childhood, initially creating animal figurines, dolls, and toys. He did not gain wider recognition until after World War II—in 1949, his works were displayed at a folk art exhibition in Kielce. A turning point came in 1953 with his meeting with Ferdynand Sodowski, a Kraków-based creator and collector of nativity scenes, who began to popularize Piłat’s work. The artist then focused primarily on religious themes. Stories, fairy tales, and legends brought back by his wife Katarzyna from her work stays in Prussia were also an important source of inspiration.
