“Romantic landscapes are not merely beautiful and atmospheric views. The artists intended them to also convey their mood and carry an additional metaphysical message. The painter sought to prolong his own melancholy or his own dreams. In reality, it was not about the panorama or the direct observation of a specific place, but about a subjective selection of elements based on their emotional value.” (ed. E. Ewertowska, “The City of Romantics: Ideas and Motifs in the Work of 19th-Century Artists in Gdańsk,” Gdańsk 2023, p. 125.)
